Somizi
Known for his family background and the influence it had on
his career within the film industry, he has appeared in a number
of movies including Sarafina and Cry the Beloved Country. Not
only is he an accomplished actor but a creative dancer and choreographer
(his work in choreography ranges from miss SA to Miss Teen SA
and the popular Coca-Cola Popstars). What most people do not
know about him is that he is also a very popular drag artist
and has performed in drag for events including the annual Rugby
Awards in 2002, and the drag show, Divas. Somizi has also been
the host of a late night talk show (Intimate Connexionz) which
was partly hosted by his drag persona “Madam Gigi”.

There are a number of body builders who work out at the Meadowlands
Community Centre. Many of these men are gay or are involved in
homosexual activities. This is a 'well-known secret', but no-one
challenges their behaviour as long as they do not label themselves
as being gay, and keep their activities discreet. It is even
rumoured that some of these bodybuilders sell sexual favours
to make ends meet. Many of these men have girlfriends who, while
aware of their unconventional sexual behaviour, are quite happy
to simply turn a blind eye. Black Beaulahs tells the story of
one particular ‘muscle Mary’.
DK
DK is a middle-aged gay man who owns a well-known funeral parlour
in Soweto. He is a controversial figure because he provides a
service, which is deemed as being 'sacred' within the black community,
and yet he lives an 'immoral' life. Hitherto, perhaps because
of his financial success, he is well supported within the community – something
that is rarely afforded to those who are gay but without financial
status in Soweto.
