Intro

Since 1993 Underdog has operated at the intersection of television, interactive media and print. We built early cross-media practice during South Africa’s democratic transition and have continually evolved—moving from broadcast-first production into strategic digital content, transmedia distribution and production advisory.

Timeline

  • 1993 — Founded: Underdog is formed as a cross-media production company focused on television, interactive and web.  
  • Late 1990s–2000s — Festival & broadcast success: Underdog’s film and television work screened internationally (New York, London, Sydney, Toronto, Berlin and Rio) and won awards (including an NTVA Avanti Gold for the documentary Death).  
  • 2000s — Notable productions: Produced Metamorphosis: The Remarkable Journey of Granny LeeFlushBlack Beulahs, and the provocative series Below the Belt (2003).  
  • 2000s — Cross-media & reality TV: Led web and enhanced channel content for Big Brother South Africa and Big Brother Africa 1, and served production roles such as Task Master and shared executive producer credits.  
  • 2000s–2010s — Corporate & NGO work: Longstanding clients include Shoprite / Woman of the Year awards campaigns, Transnet, Standard Bank and major NGOs; Underdog also created content for HIV/AIDS awareness projects and provided CSI discounts to non-profits.

Vision: To be the go-to South African partner for producers and commissioners wanting rigorous production craft plus strategic distribution and funding know-how.
