synopsis

DEATH documents how the living, in South Africa, understand and view death. Taking an intimate and personal approach, DEATH is an exploration of people's experiences and perceptions. It was produced with the desire to stimulate debate about the issue of death - often wrapped in layers of denial and taboo.

Targeted at as wide an audience as possible, its subject matter is truly a universal one. This riveting documentary combines interviews with "ordinary everyday people" as well as those involved with death on a daily basis such as Near-death survivors, a funeral director, a San shaman, an executioner, a pathologist and even a stand up comedian. They explore issues such as:

    -Cultural values and personal experiences.
-Expectations of the death experience and the afterlife.
-Fears or lack thereof of our own mortality.
    -Attempts at suicide.
-The links between art/culture and death.

EXPERIENCE a harrowing autopsy, visit the ancestors in a Bushman trance-dance and take a glimpse into a past life in ancient Egypt. Embark on a journey of fear, laughter and mystery. Share the most universal experience we must all face - death.

Using various stylistic and narrative techniques, such as a two camera shoot, fast paced editing, modern music and the use of image grading, the documentary aims to appeal both to the senses and the mind.

DEATH is a controversial, questioning and enlightening documentary that combines rarely seen footage and a unique off-beat perspective.
