Granny Lees much anticipated gravestone was finally unveiled
on South Africas Heritage Day during the Gay Pride week.
The pink gravestone bears a portrait of Lee in all her glory.
A ceremony, organised by the 2001
Gay Pride committee was held at Westpark cemetery and was
attended by around forty people.
Pride recognise the gravesite of Granny Lee as part of lesbian
and gay heritage in South Africa and in doing so acknowledge the
contribution that people make to the struggle for equality simply
by being visible and being true to themselves said Daniel
Sommerville, manager of the 2001 South African Lesbian and Gay
Pride Week.
Our thanks to the contributors to the gravestone fund: SABC 3,
Tom Knight, Underdog Entertainment and members of the public who
made contributions. May the Queen rest in peace. Click
